End of support Cloud Pathways for SQL Server 2008/R2 Customers
September 2018

Deadline to act before end of support
Microsoft Build 2016 12/8/2019 8:20 AM Deadline to act before end of support Impact of end of support No security updates Extended Support ends July 9, 2019 SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 Compliance concerns Extended Support ends January 14, 2020 Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 For Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, end-of-life mainstream support ended January 14, 2015—and Microsoft ends Extended Support on January 14, 2020. Likewise, Extended Support for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 ends July 9, The database is often tied to one or more applications running on Windows Server, so it makes sense to look at both as you build your EOS plan. Many organizations are running workloads on Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2. You can continue to use Windows Server R2 safely in your environment’s architecture, at least until the extended support expiration date. If you put off action, however, you miss out on new security and efficiency features that could easily justify a move – either to Azure or Windows Server Take the time to assess your options and make decisions that are right for your organization. With the right strategies, you can make sure your organization is protected and your infrastructure secure. Saving opportunity for modernizing your data estate is significant
Build 2015 12/8/2019 8:20 AM Saving opportunity for modernizing your data estate is significant Traditional on-premises Infrastructure (as a Service) Platform (as a Service) On-premise costs tends to be driven by heavy hardware investment and data center management costs Lower maintenance and management with Azure because certain cost categories (such as data center cost, compute cost) will likely decrease or go away HW/Data center OS Server Instances Applications Database HW/Data center OS Server Instances Database Applications HW/Data center OS Server Instances Database Applications HW/Data center OS Server Instances Database Applications You manage MSFT manages MSFT manages MSFT manages PaaS choices based on 1) the need of lift-and-shift on premises database and application (Managed Instance) and 2) just needing the database as part of new application/API/micro-services (Singleton/EP) SQL Server 2017 Azure SQL VMs Azure SQL Database (Managed Instance) Azure SQL Database (Singleton/ Elastic Pools) Platform-as-a-Service, can off-load the most administrative burdens to Azure which manages the platform at scale. Also, Azure’s tiered approach in PaaS fully enables customer choice Managed by customer Managed by MSFT © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. SQL Server 2008/R2 end of support
Azure SQL Database Managed Instance: the best pathway for end of support customers Focus of Discussion Lift-and-shift to PaaS with Azure SQL Database Managed Instance (MI) SQL DB MI takes source version as far back as SQL Server 2005; no more future upgrades required as SQL DB will always run on the latest feature as part of fully managed services SQL Modernize to Azure Modernize on premises SQL Server 2008/R2 end of support Move to IaaS with Azure SQL VM Upgrade to SQL Server 2017 on Azure VMs, or Move “as-is” with SQL Server and Windows Server 2008/R2 and get 3 years of Extended Security Updates* for free For customers who experience EoS for SQL 2008/R2, they will have 3 options to upgrade to the latest version of our software to help reduce security risks and continue to get regular security updates. These are: Migrate to Azure SQL database managed instance (SQL Database MI) – PaaS option Migrate to Azure SQL VM – IaaS option Stay on-premise and upgrade End of Support offers for SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2: Extended Security Updates in Azure: Extended Security Updates for Windows Server and SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will be offered on Azure IaaS at no additional charge above the standard pricing for Azure Virtual Machines. For customers that migrate workloads to Azure Virtual Machines, we will offer Security Updates and Bulletins rated “Critical” and “Important” for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, and those rated “Critical” for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. For SQL Server, we recommend customers consider migration to Azure SQL Database Managed Instance. Azure SQL Database Managed Instance (preview) is a new service in Azure providing near 100% compatibility with SQL Server on-premises. Managed Instance provides built-in HA/DR capabilities plus intelligent performance features and the ability to scale on the fly. Managed Instance also provides a version-less experience that takes away the need for manual security patching and upgrades. Extended Security Updates for on-premises environments: Extended Security Updates will also be available for workloads running on-premises or in a hosting environment. Customers running Windows Server or SQL Server under licenses with active Software Assurance or Subscription licenses under an Enterprise Agreement enrollment are eligible to purchase Extended Security Updates annually for three years after End of Support (for 75% of the license cost). Customers can purchase Extended Security Updates for only the servers they need to cover. This offer replaces Premium Assurance. FAQ: What is Azure SQL Database Managed Instance? A: Azure SQL Database Managed Instance combines the rich SQL Server surface area with the operational and financial benefits of an intelligent, fully-managed service. Managed Instance is an instance-scoped deployment option in SQL Database that provides the broadest SQL Server engine compatibility, so customers can migrate their SQL Server databases without rearchitecting their apps. Managed Instance uses the new vCore-based performance tiers, General Purpose and Business Critical, providing the flexibility to choose compute resources, storage performance and high availability and making it easier to translate on-premises requirements to the cloud. Customers can also maximize their on-premises license investments for savings of up to 55% on Managed Instance with Azure Hybrid Benefit for SQL Server. SQL Database Managed Instance General Purpose is currently in preview and will be generally available in early Q4 CY18. The Business Critical performance tier is available for preview in July Designed for mission-critical business apps with high I/O requirements, Business Critical provides faster storage performance and supports high availability with the highest level of storage and compute redundancy. Upgrade on premises Upgrade to SQL Server 2017** (and Windows Server 2016) * ESU worth 75% of license every year for the next three years after EOS

Azure SQL Database Managed Instance: Best for modernization at scale with low cost and effort
PaaS SQL Server and Windows Server on Azure VMs IaaS BEST FOR Enterprises looking for a fully-managed database service at the instance level and/or database level Enterprises starting cloud modernization who want to maintain OS and instance control SCENARIOs Cloud modernization for mission-critical, relational OLTP and HTAP workload Lift-and-shift on premises SQL apps to PaaS with no application code change Development of new, relational, line of business applications (as part of microservices/API) Lift-and-shift SQL apps to IaaS As cloud secondaries in hybrid HA/DR scenarios On-demand dev/test DESCRIPTION SQL Server compatibility but version-less* Control of the SQL Server instance and the database Fully-managed, no patching, upgrading or maintenance required; Comes with built-in HA/DR SSIS (Azure Data Factory SSIS), SSAS(AAS) running as PaaS SQL Server compatibility for each version of on premises SQL Server Control of the OS, SQL Server instance, and the database SSRS, SSAS, and SSIS running on VMs as IaaS SQL * SQL Database (including MI) uses database compatibility level to decouple the application from specific versions of SQL Server, thus enabling applications running on older versions of SQL Server to run on the latest DB engine. Three financial options for modernizing to Azure
SQL Server and Windows Server 2008/R2 Modernize to Azure Recommended Option A Use Software Assurance for Azure Hybrid Benefits (AHB) Use on-premise cores for vCores in Azure; Up to 4 vCores per 1 Enterprise Edition core Dual use rights up to 180 days One-click experience enabling AHB in billing Option B Server subscription for CSP customers SQL Software Subscriptions give customers the same benefits as Software Assurance All Option A benefits would apply Flexibility to try out Azure SQL without heavy upfront commitment Option C License included cost (pay-as-you-go under PaaS) Pay for what you use Azure IaaS customers (without SA) running on SQL Server 2008/R2 will qualify for free ESU For customers who decide to migrate to SQL in Azure, there are 3 purchasing models they can harness to implement the upgrade: pay-as-you-go, AHB and server subscription. Before going into how each purchasing model, let’s first take one step back and review the pricing mechanism for Azure SQL Database MI (PaaS) and Azure SQL VM (IaaS). For customers that move to Azure PaaS, the cost consists of 2 parts, the cost associated with SQL server and the cost of compute. For those who move to IaaS however, the cost consists of 3 major components: SQL server cost, Windows Server cost and compute reservation. If customers go with option 1 and migrate to Azure SQL MI: Pay-as-you-go (PAYGO): in this case, the customer will pay the full license included cost Access Azure hybrid savings (AHB) with SQL Software Assurance (SA): SQL SA will allow them to get SQL for free, and they pay for only compute cost. AHB allows customers to save up to 40% on their total cost. Server subscription: For customers without an SA, server subscription is just another way for them to access AHB savings. With server subscription, one can get SQL for free and get AHB pricing on compute reservation as well. If customers go with option 2 and migrate to Azure SQL VM: Pay-as-you-go (PAYGO): in this case, the customer will pay the full license included cost for Azure SQL VM Access Azure hybrid savings (AHB) with SQL + WS Software Assurance (SA): SQL SA will allow them to get SQL and windows server for free, and they pay for only compute cost. AHB allows customers to save up to 40% on their total cost. Server subscription: For customers without an SA, server subscription is just another way for them to access AHB savings. With server subscription, one can get SQL and Window server for free and access AHB pricing on compute reservation as well.
