Unit 1: Matter States of Matter
Mr. Le Fall 2018
2
Matter Matter : anything that takes up space and has mass.
Mass: how much matter something has (how many atoms are used to build it) There are 4 (states, phases, forms) of matter: Solid Liquid Gas Plasma
3
solids Solids have definite shape and definite volume (size)
Particles are arrange in a tight pattern and very organize. Particles vibrate in place.
4
liquids Liquids have indefinite Shape and definite volume (size)
Their shape changes based on their container. Particles can move around a little, but are still close
5
gas Gases have indefinite Shape and indefinite volume (size)
Particles are far apart and move very fast Particles move randomly, hitting and bouncing off each other.
6
Plasma Plasma has indefinite Shape and indefinite volume (size)
The particles in plasma are ions. Particles are far apart Particles move faster than gases
7
Unit 1: Matter Change of state
Mr. Le Fall 2018
8
Change of state One state of matter can change into another.
We can change the state of matter by adding or removing energy in the form of heat.
9
Change of state When we add energy, we make the particles move faster and farther apart. When we remove energy, we make the particles move slower and closer together.
10
Change of state As a Solid changes to a Liquid then to a Gas…. - The particles move faster and further apart - The temperature increases - The amount of energy increases
11
Change of state As a Gas changes to a Liquid then to a Solid…. - The particles move slower and closer together - The temperature decrease - The amount of energy decreases
12
Expansion and Contraction
Most matter expands (gets bigger) when their temperature increases. Most matter contracts (gets smaller) when their temperature decreases.
