1 Year 5 Overview

2 Fixed vs Growth A student with a fixed mindset believes that their intelligence is fixed, that each person has a set amount and that’s that. Implications Avoids challenges Gives up easily Sees efforts as pointless (weakness) Ignores useful criticism A student with a growth mindset believes that their intelligence can be developed through putting in the effort. Implications: Embraces challenges Persists in the face of setbacks Sees effort as way to improve Learns from criticism Carol Dweck (2008)

3 Marking Work is marked in relations to WALTS – we are learning to.
Teacher-child conferences- a lot of marking is done verbally, with the child present. This is indicated as VF in books. Children respond to marking and work on challenges to deepen their learning.

4 Assessment Assessment takes on a variety of forms.
Teachers make observations from class discussions and group work. Peer and Self Assessment. Summative Assessment at the beginning and end of each unit of maths learning.

5 Home learning Home learning will be given on Thursday and is due back on Wednesday. Every week: Reading daily Spellings Times tables rockstars 1 maths or English task linked to learning (30 minutes) Brain Builders twice a half term. We will aim to put it on the website where possible – under learning.

6 Learning through inquiry and using Brain builders at home
* Begin by connecting to children's prior knowledge. * Allowing children to create meaning. *Questioning, exploring, wondering, researching, experimenting. * Children taking action on their learning –please share as we love to hear about this. * Differentiation. * Extending learning outside the classroom – Brain builders.

Library books-, children can choose a book. 1 to 1 for targeted children Shared reading

8 Reading Strategies Comprehension Accuracy
Check for understanding Backup and reread Monitor and fix up Retell the story Use prior knowledge to connect with text Make a picture or mental image Ask questions throughout the reading process Predict what will happen, use the text to confirm Infer and support with evidence Use text features Summarise text Accuracy Cross checking... Do the pictures and/or words look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Use the pictures.. Do the words and pictures match? Use beginning and ending sounds Blend sounds, stretch and read Flip the sound Chunk letters and sounds together Skip the word then come back Guess a word that makes sense

9 Writing Talk for writing-retell stories
Encourage students to have a go on their own when writing Spelling: Focus on Sight Words and Spelling Patterns Spelling unknown words: encourage to have a go and sound out unknown words. Handwriting abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!

10 Mathematics We use a variety of strategies for teaching operations
Mathematics We use a variety of strategies for teaching operations. Some will be the same to those you learnt at school and some will be different. Please ask your child to explain to you how they are learning in school and listen to your child. If they are having difficult with anything and you are concerned,  please come and speak to one of us. 

11 Parent Involvement Trip volunteers- if you would like to attend trips, please fill out DBS forms (available at the office). Sharing your expertise in class related to our learning Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Harvest Festival Church 9:30am - 10:30am, 3rd October 2019 St Michael's Church Y5 are leading! Class Assemblies are advertised on the class website. This term Year 5 will be held on Wednesday 20th November

12 Communication If you ever have an questions or need to let us know about something- please don’t hesitate to catch either one of us after school and we will try to answer it as promptly as possible! Before school our priority is the children and the teaching day ahead and so we are not always available to talk.
