1 Ask not what A LC can do for you… what can you do for A LC ?
Pathway to completers Ask not what A LC can do for you… what can you do for A LC ?

2 CT program structure 3 automotive class each semester
Students take 1 class at a time Classes are 5 weeks Each automotive class is 96 contact hours Cohort doesn’t change

3 The way we were No college ready requirement-No college entrance testing. TSI ( Texas Success Initiative assessment) Each certificate had a core class as a requirement (4 certs) Associate degree was 63 hours (16 technical classes-5 core classes.)

4 The first move Removed the core class requirement from certificates.
Result = more certificates awarded. Graduate funding points increased but not significantly Certificates were being awarded all at once Associate numbers did not change. Not completing core

5 The associate degree became the focus
More funding points Advisory board Separated us from the alphabet schools

6 Learning community (LC) defined
Linked not team taught Integrated and contextualized Closed cohort (No non-automotive students) Every student had to be in it Exceptions Drop the Lc you also drop the automotive class. Lc meets 2 days a week

7 The first LC initiative
TSI testing…required student be at least 0310 in reading/writing Did not have to be math ready fall semester English 0310 Developmental built in VP of instruction exemtion letter and sign off Spring speech communications The initial idea was if students completed a couple of classes they may continue on with other core classes Survey of students supported this thought

8 Phase two Added online art appreciation in the summer as a linked only class.

9 Phase three Added math 1332 (basic college math) in fall second year
Required students to be math ready or become math ready. Built in developmental and exemption letter no longer available Added BUSI 1301 personal finance in spring of second year Except for the linked art appreciation class all the core are built into the automotive program

10 Schedule after phase three
1st semester English nd semester Speech Summer link class only to online only art appreciation 3rd semester math th semester BUSI 1301 Associate numbers went through the roof

11 Phase 4 State took away BUSI 1301 replaced by psychology which was replaced by history campus changed from traditional 16 week to 8 week classes Classes meet MTWR instead of alternating 2 days. Hybrid meet 2 days i-net the other 2

12 New schedule Fall first year 1st eight weeks English 2nd eight weeks speech Spring first year 1st eight weeks Drama-film studies ( focus on car centered films ) 2nd eight weeks history (replaced psychology) ( focus on the history of the car and its impact) fall second year 1st eight weeks math

13 What works Cannot be forced onto anyone
Admin allowing small class size (full contract) Dynamics of the players (willing and team players) Backing of dean(s) petitioned scheduling - must register in person only with CT advisor everyone involved must understand the LC process and rules Must be closed cohort teach in a familiar setting for students--such as in the automotive class room

14 Those not wanting an lc or can’t make the grade
