Thursday, September 19th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL , RL and SL Aim: How can we identify the function of character in “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin)? Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) What repression do you feel in your life and what would freedom mean to you? 2.) Why is “The Story of an Hour” both a product of its time (1894) and a universal work of literature? Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze what textual details reveal about a character, that character’s Perspective, and that character’s motives.

Thursday, September 19th, 2019 Aim: How can we identify the function of character in “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin)? Objective: Students will be able to identify and analyze what textual details reveal about a character, that character’s perspective, and that character’s motives. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Choose a captain to represent the table. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Whole Class Discussion: For the short story, “The Story of an Hour” (handout), share your answers to yesterday’s class questions. D.) Work Period: Create two multiple-choice questions (with five answer choices; circle the correct answer) for “The Story of an Hour.” Here are sample sentence starters: The organization of this passage moves from…, Contrasts developed in the passage include all of the following except..., In th passage, the author uses each of the following except..., The attitude of the author toward the repression of women is..., The last sentence of the story is an example of... E.) Q & A/Reflections: What were your impressions about “The Story of an Hour”? What were personal challenges and strengths in analyzing the text?
