13 Guided Notes: Historical Overview Transition of power
1200- Middle East was dominated by two powerful empires, the Byzantine in the northwest and the Islamic (Abbasid) caliphate through much of the middle eastern heartland. BY 1258, Mongol conquest of Baghdad had ended Abbasid Caliphate BY 1400, Ottoman Turks invaded and caused great decline in the Byzantine Empire. BY 1453, Constantinople FALLS to the Ottoman Turks and ends the Byzantine Empire. Transition of power Arabs and Chinese still leaders and major influencers, BUT, Western Europe slowly starts to contend with these locations for power… 1400s- Italy, Spain, and Portugal took the lead in Western European outreach (exploration, travel, expansion)

14 The World Economy Silver becomes global currency of the period
Everyone wants it- allows Spain to build massive armies and grand buildings, Japanese mines raise output of silver, Europeans buy Asian goods with silver China and India are largest recipients of silver-begins to replace paper money and merchants require silver even for common purchases

(location in relation to equator)

20 CARAVEL Smaller, faster ships Could maneuver in shallow waters

21 LATEEN SAILS Triangular in shape
Mounted at an angle, easier to maneuver

Learned to build ships that sat lower in the water Allowed for stable ships that could carry larger amounts of trade goods.
