Wednesday, September 25th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL , RL and SL Aim: How can we analyze the literary devices used and their purpose in the short story, “Girl” (Kincaid)? Do Now: Answer one of the following questions. 1.) How can you describe how women’s roles have changed over the last 50 years? 2.) What was the author’s message to the audience in “Girl” (Kincaid)? Objective: Students will be able to analyze literary devices and their purpose in “Girl” (Kincaid).

Wednesday, September 25th, 2019 Aim: How can we analyze the literary devices used and their purpose in the short story, “Girl” (Kincaid)? Objective: . Students will be able to analyze literary devices and their purpose in “Girl” (Kincaid). Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Work Period: Write a thesis statement for the following essay prompt on “Girl”: In a well-written essay, analyze how Kincaid uses literary elements and techniques to portray the complexity of a woman’s role in society. D.) Whole Class Sharing: Students will share their thesis statements with the class. Students will share their HW findings (the literary elements and techniques) that would be used to develop an essay. They will answer the following questions: What is the author’s purpose for using literary elements and techniques in the story? How do literary elements and techniques contribute to the author’s message about the complexity of a woman’s role in society? E.) Q & A/Reflections: What were your overall impressions about “Girl”? What were personal challenges and strengths in analyzing the text?
