How it works:
Divide the group into pairs and give them each 10 minutes to discuss and answer the questions. Allow 5-10 minutes to give the answers and discuss.

2. Activity – Lucy’s Story
Resources needed:
YouTube video ‘Burns Survivor Lucy Wilson - Her Story Part 1’
Time needed: 5-10 minutes
How it works:
The aim is to get the group to think of the potential consequences of injury. Ask them to watch this short film and to write down how Lucy describes her experiences of living with a severe scalding injury.

3. Activity – 5 for the Under 5s (1)
Resources needed:
A set of CHIP Hazard and Safety Message Cards
Time needed: minutes
How it works:
Divide the group into 5 teams. Each team will be responsible for a cause of injury: falls; choking, suffocation and strangulation; poisoning; burns and scalds; drowning.
Put the pictorial hazard cards in pile (keep the safety message cards to one side). Ask the teams to look through the cards and take out those that apply to their cause of injury (e.g. paddling pool = drowning). Then discuss with each team what they’ve chosen.

4. Activity – 5 for the Under 5s (2)

A copy of the CHIP Cards Answer Sheet
Time needed: minutes
How it works:
Put the safety message cards into a pile. Ask the teams to pick the safety messages that apply to the hazards they picked earlier. Go through the answers with each team.

5. Activity – Safety Slogans

Copies of CHIP Safety Slogans Game
Copy of CHIP Safety Slogans Answer Sheet

How it works:
Divide the group into pairs and ask them to complete the safety slogans game, matching the campaign slogan with the hazard. The give the answers. Ask each pair to come up with their own safety slogan and get the group to choose the best one. Prize optional.

6. Activity – Child Development
Resources needed:
Flipchart paper and pens
Copy of the CHIP Child Development Notes
Time needed: minutes
How it works:
Divide the group into 3 teams, one each to look at 3 different development stages: Birth to Crawling; Crawling to Walking; and Toddler.
Ask the teams to think about the different abilities and characteristics of a child at that stage of development and write them down. To help them they can think about the child’s:
Gross motor skills
Fine motor skills
Cognitive development
Exploratory behaviour
Physical characteristics
When they’ve done this, ask them to write down the injury hazards that children with these abilities and characteristics could be susceptible to. Discuss.

7. Activity – Risk Factors
Resources needed:
Flipchart paper and pens
Time needed: minutes
How it works:
Divide the group into teams and ask them to write down the factors that would make a child more at risk of a home injury. Ask them to think about child risk factors, parent risk factors, and risk factors associated with poverty. Discuss.

8. Activity – Bitrex Challenge
Resources needed:
Bitrex Taste Test Pack
Milk chocolate
Time needed: 10 minutes
How it works:
Ask for volunteers from the group (at least 3). Give each a Bitex Taste Test stick. Announce that one of the sticks has Bitrex on the end, the bitterest substance on Earth, and the other sticks have nothing on them. Each person will put the stick in their mouth, one at a time, and the audience has to guess who tasted the Bitrex from their reaction.
Participants should be encouraged to fake their reaction to throw the audience off. The catch is that all sticks have Bitrex on them.
Everyone will need some milk chocolate to take the taste away.
