1 Making and Naming Acids
Chemical formulation 4

2 Objectives Practice naming compounds with some common ion groups
Calculate the names and formula for acids

3 Naming Acids The formulas of ALL acids begin with H (hydrogen).
HNO3 H2S HBrO3

4 Naming Acids The names of ALL acids end with the word “acid.”
Phosphorous acid Nitric acid Hydrochloric acid

5 NO OXYGEN HCl Hydrogen chloride Hydrochloric acid

6 NO OXYGEN OXYGEN GROUPS

7 Formula to name 1. Add the word acid to the end
Find the name of the ion group. 3.         Change “ate” → “ic” “ite” → “ous.” Name the compounds H2SO3: ____________ acid SO42- = sulphate SO32- Sulfite acid. Sulfous acid.

8 Name to formula Phosphoric acid: 1 Change “ic” → “ate” “ous” → “ite”
2         Find the charge of the ion group. Add hydrogen and Balance the charges Phosphoric acid: Phosphoric -- phosphate phosphate = PO43- H+ PO43- H3PO4

9 That’s the end of chemical formulation!
