Types of Manufacturing
Advanced Design Applications
2
Custom Made to Mass Production
The type of manufacturing system utilized in a products development varies depending on many factors. One important factor that helps determine the manufacturing system is the number of products to be produced. Other factors include number of variations of the product, materials availability, and processes needed to manufacture.

(3) Main Methods of Manufacturing
Custom Manufacturing Intermittent Manufacturing Continuous Manufacturing
4
Custom Manufacturing Small numbers of products
Usually one of a kind items Produced to customers specifications Most expensive type of manufacturing Requires special tooling to complete jobs – must shut down and retool for a new product.
5
Intermittent Manufacturing
Products are mass produced in sizable quantities Process starts and stops at intervals – when the required numbers of parts have been produced Not as expensive as custom manufacturing Job-Lot Manufacturing
6
Continuous Manufacturing
Produces products in a steady flow – assembly line Making the product is split into smaller jobs or tasks Resources typically move and the workers are stationary Method saves time and money Flexible Manufacturing
7
Assignment DIRECTIONS – Use the Internet to research and define the following methods of manufacturing. Summarize each method of manufacturing. Explain the major ideas behind it. (What is it; How does it work), the benefits (advantages), and the drawbacks (disadvantages). Compile your answers into a PowerPoint presentation. Document all sources used.
