Popular Sovereignty The right of the people to participate in government and having the consent of the people. The government is responsible to the people.

Limited Government To ensure that a central government never becomes overly powerful the government can only carry out powers listed in the Constitution.

Separation of Powers Division of government into three branches, each with their own powers and responsibilities. Legislative Branch – Congress Executive Branch – President Judicial Branch – Supreme Court

Checks and Balances Each branch of government is able to check, or control the power of the other two branches.
