Activator: Take out your H.W. Solve in your notebook
3
Try this: Go to pg. 61 in your packet. Read the DOT PLOT.
Write one conclusion for EACH dot plot on your POST IT note. Write “which DOT PLOT has a bigger variability?” Write how you know. Girl’s Team Boy’s Team

calculate the mean absolute deviation (MAD) for a given data set.
Today I will be able to…. interpret the mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a data set as the average distance of the data values from the mean. So I can... calculate the mean absolute deviation (MAD) for a given data set. I will know I got it when I can... Apply my knowledge to solve at least 2 out of 3 real world problems with least 80% accuracy with a partner or by myself. 6.SP.A.3

Language Objective By the end of the lesson, students will be able to use the language domains of reading and writing to communicate the academic math language of statistics. They will verbally interpret/communicate and write the mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a data set as the average distance of the data values from the mean. They will calculate the mean absolute deviation (MAD) for a given data set and show their understanding by solving at least 2 out of 3 real world problems with least 80% accuracy with a partner or by myself. Academic Math Language Vocabulary: data set, mean, , deviation, mean absolute deviation (MAD).

Let’s Review: What is Variability?
Variability is when not all the values in a data set are the same. When the variable in a data set are all very similar, there isn't much variability, but if the values differ a lot, there is more variability. What is Variability?
8
Which city has more variability?
The temperatures are more spread out around the mean NYC San Francisco
9
Let’s Review: May 2, 2016 What does a distribution that has no variability look like? All of the data value are the same.
10
Let’s Review: What does a distribution that has more variability look like? The data points are spread far a part.
11
Go to pg. 56 “City A” has the smallest variability because all the data points are the same. Cities D, E, and F. They appear to have data points that are the most spread out. It would be useful to have a more formal way to measure variability in a data set.
12
Go to pg. 55 least variability most variability
Order the seven data sets from least variability to most variability.
