1 Skills Week – Halloween

2 Skills Week – Halloween
This skills week will look at some of the skills and techniques that are used in GCSE geography. The idea is to embed these skills throughout the school – skills questions are often a very easy win in terms of securing marks! Lesson 1: Photo annotation (describing and explaining) Interpreting data from graphs and maps Lesson 2: ‘To what extent’ questions Latitude and longitude

3 Skills Week – Halloween
Photo annotation. You may be asked to label or annotate photos. This usually requires the skill of description as you cannot talk about anything that you can’t see! You must also point directly at the part of the photo that you are referring to in order to get full marks. Rule 1: write only descriptive words. Rule 2: the arrow must point to the exact spot that you’re talking about on the image.

4 Skills Week – Halloween
Question: annotate this image to show why this location has a ‘spooky’ sense of place (4 marks) The sky is dark and brooding. The trees have a gnarled appearance. The house is large with gothic features. There are gravestones in the garden.

Writing explanations. You need to know the difference between describe and explain. Descriptions state what can be observed. What is it like/What is is? Explanations offer reasons or more depth. Why is it like this/Why is this? If you struggle to explain, use the word ‘because’.

13 Skills Week – Halloween
Let’s try to turn our descriptions into explanations: Explain why some places are seen as ‘spooky’. Night time scenes are always more frightening because we are unable to see properly. Gnarled trees give a sense of ‘death’ being present because the tree is lifeless. Large houses have a lot of empty space, which can be intimidating. Gothic architecture has often been associated with horror. ( Gravestones are scary because they show that there are dead bodies beneath the ground.

14 Skills Week – Halloween
Question: Now use your image to explain why some places are seen as ‘spooky’

15 Skills Week – Halloween
Here’s a new image. Using a post-it note, write one describe sentence and one explain sentence for this image. House points for the best 10 post-it notes so don’t forget your name! Name: Describe - First write something you can see Explain - Then say why it’s spooky (use the word because)

16 Skills Week – Halloween
Interpreting graphs and maps. You may be asked to explain what graphs or maps show. This could involve describing and explaining, it depends on the question! The next few slides show graphs and maps about ghost sightings. For each graph or map, describe what it shows and see if you can explain any of the patterns.

17 Skills Week – Halloween
Graph 1: Ghost sightings by hour of the day.

18 Skills Week – Halloween
Graph 2: Ghost sightings by day of the week.

19 Skills Week – Halloween
Map 1: Countries with the most haunted locations

20 Skills Week – Halloween
Map 2: Countries with the most sightings of mythical creatures (unicorns, dragons, mermaids, werewolves……)

21 Skills Week – Halloween
So, what have we learned this lesson? Name 5 things that make a place have a haunted or spooky feel. What time of the day are you most likely to see a ghost? What day of the week are you most likely to see a ghost? Which countries have the most haunted locations? Which countries have had the greatest number of mythical creatures sighted? ……oh and the important stuff: describe vs explain, interpreting graphs and map, working out if ghosts are real………
