3. Extrinsic Motivation
Our motivation is guided by rewards and punishment, actions and conditions outside of ourselves. We call this extrinsic motivation

4. Intrinsic Motivation
We do not do everything just to gain. Some activities we do just because we enjoy them - we are motivated from the inside of ourselves.

5. Intrinsic Motivation
When people are intrinsically motivated, they are active and they participate, but first and foremost they learn better and faster.

6. Characteristics of Adult Learners
Generally adults are:
Self-directed
Likely to be rigid in thinking
Anxious about failure
Impatient to achieve their own objectives
Realistic and not easily fooled.
Very different because of their different life experiences.

Generally adults are not:
Captive audience
Willing to participate if anxious or have a low self esteem

Physical:
Are likely to be tired after work
Need good lighting and few distractions
Must cope with competing demands for their time
Energy, hearing, vision and short-term memory deteriorate with age

Need:
To feel success
Expect:
Value for money
To be treated as mature people
An enjoyable and satisfying environment

Respond:
To good manners and courtesy
Positively to acknowledgement and praise from the instructor
To having their knowledge, skills and experience used by the trainer as prior learning
To the rejection of their life experiences as a rejection of them personally.
