3 Lab Safety Scenario I Below are descriptions of a scenario. Read each scenario and use your own paper to describe what each student should do. Scenario 1: Tamika is working in the lab with several chemicals that are in different test tubes. She is wondering what would happen if she mixes some of these chemicals together. What should Tamika do? Why?

4 Lab Safety Scenario Tamika should NOT mix the chemicals! She should wait for her teacher's instructions. In the lab we never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so.

5 Learning Objective SWBAT Review lab safety rules IOT explain major lab safety rules and procedures.

6 Purposes of Lab Safety Keep you and others from getting hurt! Prevent damage to equipment and property I don’t want to have to clean up the blood or body parts!

7 Kinds of hazards Cutting hazards: Chemical hazards: Biological hazard: Fire or heat hazards:

8 Cutting hazards Broken glass Pointed objects Scalpel or razor blades Don’t pick up broken glass. Report it to Ms. Harris-Toro. Use tools and equipment as directed.

9 Chemical Hazards Some are poisonous Some cause skin or eyes to burn Some damage your stuff Wear goggles when required Be careful. Don’t try to clean up spills. ➢ Report it to Ms. Harris-Toro

10 Biological or Biohazards Come from living things (bacteria, virus, fungi) Can be poisonous Can make you very ill Wear plastic gloves when required. Wash hands with soap and water for at least 25 seconds (Sing “Happy Birthday” twice.)

11 Fire or heat hazards Can burn skin and tissues Smoke inhalation can damage lungs Can come from chemicals or objects that are hot Be careful around flame or hot objects. Use pot holders Put burned areas under cold water

16 CLOSE Lab Safety Scenario II Maria is heating a liquid in a test tube. She knows she is supposed to heat the test tube in a specific direction but doesn't remember exactly which direction it is. According to the lab safety procedures, what direction should Maria heat the test tube? Why?

17 Maria should heat the liquid in the test tube with the opening of the test tube pointing in a direction away from herself and others.

21 Lab Safety Challenge In teams of two students, complete the lab safety challenge and try to get 100% in order to be exempt from tomorrow’s lab safety test. Good Luck!
