1. What is Painting? The process or art of using paint, either in a picture or as decoration.
Stippling – A technique where you cover an area with dots.
Colour wash – A watered down solution of paint that you use to add a colour or tint to a paper. You can use a large brush or a sponge.
Dry Brushing - A painting technique in which a paint brush that is relatively dry, but still holds pint. v
Colour Bleed – When one wet colour runs into another causing blurring.
Impasto – A manner of painting where the paint is laid on thickly so texture stands out in relief.
Easel – A supporting frame for holding an artist’s work while it is being painted or drawn.
Wet on Wet – A painting technique, used mostly in oil painting, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previous layers of wet paint.
Palette – A thin board or tray on which an artist lays and mixes colours.
Blending –Painting colours so that there is a gentle and gradual transition from one to the other.
Palette Knife – A palette knife is a blunt tool used for mixing or applying paint.

2. TYPES OF PAINT OIL PAINT POSTER PAINT / READY MIX PAINT
Oil paint is pigment mixed with an oil binder.
Oil Paint is thinned with turpentine.
Oil paintings are known for their deep rich tones and is a classic medium used for centuries.
Oil paints take weeks to dry and should be sealed with varnish after several months.
Some artist do not varnish their paintings until 1 year after they have been created.

POSTER PAINT / READY MIX PAINT
Poster paint is often referred to ready mixed paint and usually comes in bottles ready to use.
Poster paint has glue in it which helps this type of paint bond to many surfaces.
Poster paint is usually a popular choice for covering 3D sculptures.
Poster paint is water soluble
Poster paint is normally ‘cheep’ which makes it a perfect choice for large theatrical backdrops for scenery. It is used a lot within primary schools as it doesn’t take any preparing.
WATERCOLOUR PAINT
Watercolour paints are a popular medium for a lot of artists.
Watercolour paints allow a translucent effect to be created and translucent colours can be created.
Pigments are water based and mixed with a gum.
Watercolours can be blotted and easily lifted from the paper.
Water colours are best applied with soft brushes.
It is common to layer several washes to gain a deeper, richer look.
Water colour paints come in blocks and tubes.

3. TYPES OF PAINT ACRYLIC PAINT
Acrylic paint is pigment mixed with a polymer binder and is water soluble when wet.
Acrylic Paint can be thinned with water or gels.
It can be used in the same way as watercolour paints using layers of washes and wet on wet techniques.
Acrylic paint can also be used in a thick impasto.
Gel medias can be mixed into acrylic paint to make it flat, shiny, textured or bumpy. This adds additional effect.
Once acrylic is dry it is permanent.
BRUSHES FOR PAINTING
Sable Brushes – They are made from animal hair. They are extra soft; great for blending, layering and bleeding effects.
Hog Hair Brushes – Often called China bristle brushes. These brushes are stronger and stiffer with coarser bristles; great for stippling techniques.

4. TEXTURE IN PAINTING TEXTURE IN PAINTING
Texture refers to the look and feel of the canvas. It is based on the paint, and its application, or the addition of materials such as ribbon, metal, wood, lace, leather and sand.
The texture stimulates two different senses: sight and touch.
There are four types of texture in art: actual, simulated, abstract, and invented texture.
TEXTURE IN PAINTING
Actual texture - is a combination of how the painting looks, and how it feels on being touched. It is associated both with the heavy build up of paint, such as an impasto effect, or the addition of materials.
Simulated texture- Simulated texture involves drawing the visual effect of texture without actually adding it.
Abstract texture - Abstract texture does not directly represent the object it is connected with but the concept of the object is translated in textural patterns.
Invented texture - Invented texture is a creative way of adding alternate materials to create an interesting texture.
