1
The dance of the chromosomes
Cell Cycle The dance of the chromosomes
2
3 Stages of Cell Cycle Interphase Mitosis Cytokinesis
grow and copy DNA Mitosis distribute DNA Cytokinesis split into 2 identical cells
3
Interphase-“copy and prepare”
Cell grows Copies DNA Cell prepares to divide Dance move-crouch down with one hand down and rise up, spread out fingers and bring other hand around
4
Mitosis 4 stages-prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
Chromosomes are divided up and given to 2 new cells
5
Prophase-“coil and condense”
Chromatin condenses and organizes into chromosomes Nuclear membrane breaks down Spindle fibers line up Dance move: make hands into an “x” by your stomach with your fingers closed
6
Metaphase-“align and attach”
Chromosomes line up in middle of cell Chromosomes attach to spindle fiber Dance move-move hands in front of face still in “x” shape
7
Anaphase-“divide and drag”
Centromeres split Chromatids move to ends of cell Cell stretches out Dance move-slide hands to side still condensed
8
Telophase-“unwind and expand”
Chromatids stretch back out and unwind Nuclear membrane reforms Dance move-wiggle fingers to un-condense
9
Cytokinesis-“separate and go your own way”
Cytoplasm divides Creates two new identical cells Dance move-slide and move away
10
