NWMC Tacoma, Washington October 11, 2019 @JessicaWillows1 @srobinsonSD64
2
Overview of Session What is balanced numeracy?
Key components of a balanced numeracy framework Instructional Routines Debrief & Discussion: opportunities for professional learning Overview of Session
5
What does balanced numeracy look like?
routines rich learning environment: access, materials anchor charts, number talks, mini-lessons, guided math time whole group, small group, individual foundations, developmental nature, computational fluency choice/inquiry play, fun, joy discourse competencies–what mathematicians do common language tools bigger picture conceptual connections
6
What would help support teachers to build a balanced numeracy program in their classrooms?
We should bring postcards and stickers.
7
What beliefs about children and learning guide our work:
Learning takes patience and time Students need opportunities to be mathematicians Problem solving is fundamental to the study of mathematics There is a progression of learning in mathematics An inquiry-based approach includes rich tools and student problem posing which nutures engagement, curiosity, and deep understandings ALL students can do math

We suggest that you start your professional learning journey by considering which component of balanced numeracy you would like to explore first. Within each component you will find an overarching question followed by more specific questions. We have included considerations and resources for each question to support your inquiry.
