3 Can recall definitions
Lesson Objectives Lesson Competency (Level 1-3) Proficiency (Level 4-6) Mastery (Level 7-9) 1 Can recall definitions Can name compounds of elements from given formulae or symbol equations. N/A

4 What could our key words be?

5 What is the difference between this Lego?

6 An element is a substance that is made of only one type of atom.
A mixture contains different substances that are not chemically joined together. A compound is a substance made from atoms of different elements chemically joined together.

7 Why do elements sometimes have weird names and symbols?

8 How many elements can you use to make your name?

9 Which elements spell our names?
4 1 3 5 2 1. Sulphur, hydrogen, rhenium, potassium 2. Boron, aluminium, oxygen, oxygen 3. Tungsten, oxygen, oxygen, dysprosium This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA 4. Sulphur, cobalt, oxygen, oxygen, boron, yttrium 5. Phosphorus, iodine, potassium, actinium, hydrogen, uranium

10 Can you complete this task?
Na Cl C Mg Hg Ag Cu Fe H Au O N Identify each of the elements Why are each of these materials elements? Which elements are in carbon dioxide (CO2), Water (H2O), Silver chloride (AgCl)?

11 How are elements organised?
Na Cl C Can you identify the 3 elements What are the key features of an element’s symbol?

12 How do scientists use the periodic table?
Metals are found on the left side of the periodic table Non-metals are found on the right side of the periodic table

13 How could you combine two elements?

14 Groups – These are vertical columns of elements
Groups – These are vertical columns of elements. They are labelled 1 to 8. In each group elements have similar properties

15 Periods – These are the horizontal rows of the periodic table

16 Which elements above are metals?
Which elements above are non- metals? Which elements are in the same period? How can I tell each of the elements above have different properties?
