Respect and Reverence Any right thinking man or woman would want to have the best of everything for himself. Besides wanting to be a success in his endeavors, the average person would like to be regarded by his fellowmen as a man of honor, of good character and reputation. To his country, he must be a good citizen – for us in the Philippines, a good Filipino citizen.
3
What is a good Filipino citizen?

The good citizen is one who plays an active and intelligent role as a member of the community. Good citizen as one who fulfills his duties and obligations to the government and society. All these have for their basis the simple matter of proper behavior and correct dealing with other people.

1. Respect and Consideration for Others
- The first thing that we observe in early childhood is respect for our elders. From the moment we said “mama” or “papa” to our parents, we have guided in our growth to become respectful boys and girls and finally to be men and women who have the utmost consideration for the rights and feelings of other people. The development of this trait of respectfulness and consideration for others is most important in making of good citizen.

2. Respect for Parents We cannot claim to be respectful persons unless we have proven ourselves to be obedient children to our parents. From the day we were born, our fathers and mothers have assumed the responsibility of guiding us in the right path to manhood or womanhood. It should not be a wonder then they set for the children certain rules to be followed inside and outside the home. These rules, no matter how unpleasant some of them may be, are prescribed by our parents in order that the children may know what is right and what is wrong. The regulation set by our parents may differ, depending on where they live, on their education, and their financial condition.
7
Whatever the circumstances in which we live, we owe it to our parents to respect their judgment because they have our welfare in their hearts. The civil code tells all Filipinos to “honor your parents and serve them gratefully and dutifully” and “to respect your elders and harkens to their counsel.”
8
Many children do not realize the sacrifices and hardships that their parents undergo just to send them school. Have we ever thought that our parents are spending money for our schooling?
9
The answer is because our fathers and mothers want us to acquire an education in order that we can be successful in undertakings, if possible more successful than they are.

3. Behavior in the Community
Outside home, one finds himself in the midst of other people – be it in school, in the playground, in the bus, or in the street. The people we study with, work with, or play with are the human beings like us. However each of them occupies different stations in life – some are your classmates, some are teachers, and some are your friends. But all of them will regard you and deal with you in manner depending on your behavior and conduct. If you show them respect and consideration for their feelings, you can expect the same things from them.

How do we establish good relationship with the other people in our community?

In family circles, parents and elders are greeted with opo, nanay, tatay, manong, manang, etc. when called, answered with po and with opo, when asked. These Filipino courtesies should be observed in school by the students answering “Yes, Sir”, “No Sir”, “Yes, Ma’am”, “No, Ma’am”.
