4 Wired, wireless, network
Lesson Sequence Specification – GCSE OCR Computer Science Teaching from Sept 2016 onwards Spec Reference 2b. 1.4 Topic Wired and Wireless Networks Lesson Wired and Wireless Technology Sequence 9 of 12 Key Words; Wired, wireless, network

5 Lesson Objectives Lesson Competency (Level 1-3) Proficiency
Mastery (Level 7-9) 9 To define wired and wireless networks To identify the best network for a given case To analyse factors which affect network performance To test your knowledge

6 Types of wired and wireless Networks
What do we mean by wired and wireless networks? Extension Explain the different types of wireless and wired network. 3 minutes

7 Types of wired and wireless Networks
What are the different types of Networks? Wide Area Network (WAN) Collection of computers and networks connected together using resources supplied by a ‘third part carrier’ such as BT. Uses cables, satellites and radio waves. Spreads over a wide geographical area. Local Area Network LAN Covers a small geographical area. Consists of a collection of computers and peripheral devices connected together. LAN is often owned by a single person or organisation VIRTUAL A subset of computers connected together as part of a large physical network. This can be set up when an employee in a remote location needs to connect to a private network. Communications can be encrypted.

8 The best network for a given case
Using the worksheet IDENTIFY which network would be best. Extension EXPLAIN why you have chosen that type of network for each case.

9 Factors which affect network performance
ANALYSE EXPLAIN what the following factors mean: Latency Throughput Packet Loss Retransmission 2. How do these factors AFFECT wired and wireless networks EVALUATE DISCUSS the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of wired and wireless networks EVALUATE which type of network you think is best and give reasons for your answer

10 Lesson Objectives Lesson Competency (Level 1-3) Proficiency
Mastery (Level 7-9) 9 To define wired and wireless networks To identify the best network for a given case To analyse factors which affect network performance To test your knowledge
