What was the geographic location?
Area west of the Mississippi River Louisiana Territory Stretched south to the city of New Orleans West to the Rocky Mountains Belonged to Spain

What was happening in the Area?
Pioneers set up farms & transported goods Spanish owned area--allowed use of the Mississippi R. Spain suddenly stopped allowing use Secret deal—land transferred to France

Why was This a Problem? France’s leader Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to create an empire in America French control of Mississippi River would put trade at risk

What did the U.S. do? Ended up buying the whole territory for $15 million (4 cents an acre) The purchase under President Jefferson doubled the size (828,000 sq. miles) of the U.S. in 1803 Includes the present day states of Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Nebraska, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming.
