Fentenyl and lorazepam use for the first 5 d of ventilatory support are presented. The large SD values prevented significant differences between airway pressure release ventilation (APRV) and conventional mechanical ventilation, but a strong trend indicates less use of these drugs in conventional mechanical ventilation as compared with airway pressure release ventilation.
