1 Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)
Mr. Kaufman

2 What’s the difference between STIs and STDs?
An STI is a sexually transmitted infection, and an STD is a sexually transmitted disease. STDs and STIs are often used interchangeably and as synonyms, but they technically mean different things. All STD’s are STI’s but not all STI’s are STD’s

3 How do you catch an STI? You can get an STI by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has an STI. Anyone who is sexually active can get an STI. You don’t even have to “go all the way” (have anal or vaginal sex) to get an STI. This is because some STIs are spread by skin-to-skin contact.

4 Common Symptoms of STI’s
Some common symptoms of STI could be: No symptoms (most common)  Unusual discharge or odour from penis or vagina Abdominal pain or genital pain or swelling  Burning when urinating (Spotting between periods) Tingling or itching of genital area Sores or bumps in and around the genital area Sore throat after oral sex Flu-like symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, fever, weight loss

5 Most Common Chlamidya  Genital Herpes HPV Gonnorhea  HIV  Vaginitis

6 Can STI’s/STD’s be treated?
Your doctor can prescribe medicine to cure some STI’s. Some STD’s, like herpes, or HIV can’t be cured, but you can take medicine to help with the symptoms.

7 Warning! STI’s and STD's are on the rise
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal that STD rates continue to climb From : Syphilis cases nearly doubled Gonorrhea cases increased by 67% Chlamydia remained at record highs

8 Why are STI’s and STD’s on the rise?
Potential link between STI risk and drug use People are simply just not going and getting checked With the introduction of contraceptives like IUDs – people are foolishly ditching the condom!  Not counting oral / anal sex as sex

9 Bottom line… There is only one way to completely avoid an STI /STD:
Abstinence. However there are ways to extremely limit the likelihood of a catching an STI/STD. They are: Limiting the number of partners you have sex with. The proper use of condoms!
