Blog: Shorter University I’m from Covington, Georgia. This is my 18th year of teaching. I have taught grades K-8th grade. I have two daughters and one son. My oldest daughter will be attending the University of North Georgia this fall. My son is in the second grade. My middle daughter is a senior in high school.

7 What your child will be learning this year . . .
Students will have a primary focus on literary text and a secondary focus on informational text, alternating each 9 weeks. A literary text is a piece of written material, such as a book or poem, that has the purpose of telling a story or entertaining, as in a fictional novel. Informational text is a subset of the larger category of nonfiction (Duke & Bennett-Armistead, 2003). Its primary purpose is to inform the reader about the natural or social world. Different from fiction, and other forms of nonfiction, informational text does not utilize characters.

11 Film clips to teach theme, character traits, conflict, tone, and mood

12 Music to teach poetry – rhyme, repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia

13 What we plan to do 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens – A self help book for successful habits; adapted from the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Students will refer back to their inferred responses and questions to the 18 Under 18 article and the Successful Entrepreneur biography/Warm-Ups. Indirectly Teaching. Teach Back – As a PSA on each habit. Incorporate songs, poems, and quotes.
