1 II. Chemical Reactions

2 A. Energy in Chemical Reactions
1. Chemical Reaction is when bonds are broken and form a new compound 2. The reactants are the items combined 3. Products are the stuff that is formed

3 4. Energy that drives the reaction is free energy
a. If it releases energy it is exergonic b. If it absorbs energy it is endergonic 5. Sometimes reactions happen immediately, sometimes not a. Extra energy to start a reaction is activation energy

4 6. Activation energy sparks the reactions
a. A substance that lowers activation energy is a catalysts b. Using a catalyst is catalysis

5

6 B. Enzymes 1. Enzymes are proteins that trigger reaction in a living item 2. What an enzyme binds to to lower activation energy is a substrate 3. Enzymes bind at an active site like a lock and key a. Very specific 4. If the enzyme’s shape changes, it does not work as well a. Temperature and pH do this a lot
