6. Our curriculum this year
Please refer to the handout to see what we are doing this term.
Spring term –
Our focus will be on preparing for the SATs but also having an engaging curriculum. Our topic will be Greeks with a look at their history and how they have influenced modern society.
Summer term –
Our final term will be looking at the Victorians. We will be finishing off the year with a performance, hopefully having our Enterprise faire and, of course, the residential.

7. A normal day in Year 6 (AM)
8:40 - Mr Seery is on the playground for quick chats and children should be putting phones in the office.
8:45 – One line – ready for proud walking. We enter the school silently and take off our coats. Children hand in reading diaries, any contact books with notes are handed in directly to Mr Seery. Children will need to complete half a page of mental maths before assembly.
9:15 – Assembly
9:30 – Maths (10 minutes of targeted arithmetic with a 45 minute lesson) Children are in separate groups according to ability and need.
10:30 – Breaktime – Any unfinished work and non-readers stay into complete.
10:45 – English and Guided reading
12:10 – Lunch

8. A normal day in Year 6 (PM)
13:00 – Afternoon begins with a SPAG warm up activity – normally spelling and handwriting.
13:15 – Afternoon session 1
14:15 – Afternoon session 2
15:00 – Mindfulness minute
15:05 – Class story
15:15 – End of day

10. Our expectations
Children are Year 6 and that means they are role models for our school.
We expect their behaviour in all parts of the school to be perfect.
We reinforce that children should be mature, organised and responsible for their actions.
Children should be reading every day for minutes with an age-appropriate book. They will need to complete their reading record with a meaningful entry that shows me what they have gained from their reading.
Children should be practising spellings as and when possible.
Contact books should be shared and signed regularly.
Children are responsible for the above – not you!

11. SATS Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) are
statutory end of key stage tests of the core subjects of the National Curriculum: English and Maths. Papers are sent away to independent markers and then returned to the school.
Results are out in the beginning of July.
Writing is now teacher assessed.

12. How you can help us…..
You are the biggest influence on your child and your words carry more weight than ours ever can….
Be supportive
Be kind
Be firm
Discuss problems and how they can be solves.
Be open to talking to your child about their concerns and encourage them to share concerns with us. We are open to questions and like to resolve matters quickly.
Encourage them to do their homework and to read. Homework is not optional and must be completed. If homework is not completed they will be kept in at playtimes and asked to complete it.
Never miss a day of school if you can help it!
Most importantly….
Know when to step back.
Foster their maturity
Don’t encourage babyish or immature behaviour
Encourage their responsibility.

We run homework club every Monday during lunch.
We offer a selection of amazing Year 6 appropriate texts to read.
