3. IB STUDENTS AND 2019 ADMISSIONS
Almost 16% of IB students had a rank of and above (compared to 1.6% of HSC students)
Three Go8 unis accounted for 83% of 1st preferences
Most popular fields of study were Society and Culture (includes Law, Psychology and Economics); Health; and Natural and Physical Sciences (includes Maths, Medical Science)

4. 2019 ADMISSIONS 6.3% more IB applicants
1,274 offers made to IB students (increase of 14.1%)
961 (92.4%) students received at least one offer (increase of 20%)
Average 1.33 offers per student (decrease of 5.3%)

5. 2019 ADMISSIONS
62.9% of IB students received an offer to their 1st preference (compared to 57.3% last year)
22.2% received an offer to their second preference (up from %)
Compared to HSC: 1st preference offers were 63.1% (down from %) and 2nd preference offers were 20.5% (up from 21.2%)

14. WHY?
We review all our schedules regularly as better data becomes available
We have been working with IBO for 18 months to obtain finer-grained data about the performance of IB students to inform a new schedule
This is not happening in response to reports in the media
This is a schedule used in other states so agreement has been reached nationally on this change

15. 2017 ATAR/IB COHORT COMPARISON
57,061 students in NSW received an ATAR
46 of these students received % of the cohort
Median ATAR was 69.00 IB
527 NSW students attempted the IB
13 of these received % of the cohort.
Controlling for cohort size, this is roughly 30 times more than the ATAR cohort
The median IB score was 36, which mapped to a rank of
The IB score of 24 mapped to a rank of 69.05, which is roughly the same as the middle student in the ATAR cohort.

16. MORE GRADATIONS TO BE ADDED
The current schedule has limited mapping points because of the coarseness of reported DP grades (1 – 7)
ACTAC have been working with the IB for the last 18 months to obtain finer-grained data to improve the schedule and make it fairer for all students.
The result is that we can better differentiate between DP students on the same overall DP score.
Currently each IB grade in a particular subject covers a range of marks. For example, in , students with a mark of 62 to 74 in Biology SL all received a grade of 6. For the new score we will take into account the mark underlying the grade. In doing so, students with higher underlying marks may receive a better rank than students who are on the same grade but have a lower mark.
Overall DP score will not change but extra gradations between each DP scores will be introduced.

17. IMPLEMENTATION
The IB will advise IB result to students including percentage marks for each subject – IB DP score
ACTAC will calculate and advise the new finer-grained score; the International Baccalaureate Admission Score (IBAS)
This score will be used to derive the admissions rank as per the new schedule
This rank will be the basis of the UAC Selection Rank (which includes adjustments)

18. IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE
Students already in Years 11 and 12 will not be affected
First cohort to be affected are students in Year 10 in 2019
The new schedule is to be introduced for 2022 admissions

19. CONSEQUENCES OF THE CHANGE
60% of students will retain the same rank
25% of students ranks will go up
15% of students ranks will go down
The new schedule shouldn’t have a significant impact on DP students competitiveness
The new schedule shouldn’t impact Year 10 subject choice or the choice of the DP over a state qualification
The IB Diploma is held in high regard in terms of university admissions and the new schedule is not intended to undermine the DP in any way
