STUDYING CIVICS IN ROMANIAN SCHOOLS

Civic Education is part of Romanian school curriculum.
In Romania the national curriculum is COMPULSORY in all schools. Romanian students study Civic Education starting with the 3rd Grade and till the 8th Grade, one class a week.

Civics in Primary School
During the 3rd Grade they study just general knowledge about Civics. Students in the 4th Grade (students of 10 years old) study (a chapter) CHILDREN’S RIGHTS. They study about children’s rights, children’s duties, protecting children’s rights.

Civic Education in Secondary School
The fifth graders (11 years old) study Critical Thinking and Children’s Rights. The main topics are: The Right to an Identity, Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Right to a Family Life, The Right to Education, The Right to Play, The Right to Social Security and Protection, The Right to Protection against violence and abuse, Children as promoters of Children’s Rights.

Respect, Support and Promote Children’s Rights- a chapter taught to fifth graders and which includes topics regarding: Children at Risk, The Role of The State in Protecting Children’s Rights ( responsibilities of the Government) The Role of NGOs and Civil Society

CIVIC EDUCATION In the 7th grade, students (13 years old) study
The first unit is dedicated to Human Rights. Students will acquire knowledge regarding the rights of man and citizen. The topics include: right to life, liberty, equality, personal security.

Methods and techniques
Civic Education is taught in our schools by using a great variety of methods and techniques such as: case study method, role play, brainstorming and project method. Students are asked to solve problems on personal, local and global level.
