What is the Renaissance?
A cultural revival that swept through Europe from the 1350s – 1500s. Renaissance means “rebirth”. - Love for art and education -Interest in Ancient Greek and Roman works revived.

What are the Origins of the Renaissance?
Began in Northern Italy because there was a lot of banking. This lead to a lot of money, and the wealthy wanted to spend it on the arts. Growth of trade promoted a free flow of ideas (new way of thinking). Contact with the Middle East led to knowledge of science and math.

What are the characteristics of the Renaissance?
1. Humanism - a way of thinking and learning that stresses the importance of human abilities, actions, and accomplishments.

2. Classical Art - Influenced by classical Greece and Rome artists, architects, poets, and authors. 3. Questioning spirit - all was questioned; nothing was taken for granted or taken as fact.

When did the Renaissance start?
Around the 1350s. Beginning of the Renaissance marks the end of the middle ages.
