9/5 Opener Use the nametags on the tables to find your seat.
On a notecard write down your name, a nick name if that is what you would prefer to be called, and if your name has a unique pronunciation please record that info as well. Draw a picture or tell me about your favorite event from the summer. Example: Mrs. Kemp pronounced like former Sonic superstar Shawn Kemp I went to Diagon Alley!

We will have more safety instruction tomorrow! Woohoo!!
Safety is our number one priority. Each student will be required to submit a safety contract before our first lab. Lab activities require the following safety procedures: tying back hair, no open toed shoes, and clothing must be long enough to cover your upper legs. We will have more safety instruction tomorrow! Woohoo!!

Absences & Tardiness Tardiness: Absences
NKHS policies regarding tardies will be enforced. Being tardy to class shows a lack of respect for your fellow students and their learning process. Absences I don’t encourage you to miss class. Much of classroom learning takes place through discussion, labs, and activities. Students who are absent may miss content that will affect their ability to be successful in the class. If you are aware of a possible absence, please notify me before the missed day, so I can set you up with materials for that class period. You are responsible for completing all assignments you missed while absent.

Make-up Work It is your responsibility to obtain any assignments or notes you missed while you were absent, including Openers. Assignments & Homework* For full credit students should complete and return make up work per school handbook expectations. If you are absent for two days and return on a Wednesday you would need to return all make up work by Friday for full credit. Labs Make an appointment to complete lab work ASAP For full credit students will be given one week past their return from an absence to complete labs or the end of the month, whichever comes first. An alternate assignment may be given if lab equipment is no longer available. Tests & Quizzes Make an appointment for tutorial, before, or after school ASAP Tests and quizzes must be completed by the end of the month, after returning from an absence. *If work was assigned before the absence I expected it upon your return!

Late Work Policy & Academic Dishonesty
Assignments will only be accepted until the end of the month of the original due date. Please note that the grade book will reflect a zero until the work is turned in for partial credit. If the work is not completed by the end of the month the zero will stay in the grade book. Late assignments and homework Can be turned in for up to 70% for students present on the due date. Late lab reports and projects A 10% penalty each day for a maximum of three days will apply to labs & projects. After three days the maximum score the student can receive on the assignment is 70% until the end of the month. Academic Dishonesty (Plagiarism/Cheating) I follow all policies for NKHS academic dishonesty that can be reviewed in the student handbook.

Classroom Policies 1. Class Signal – “May I have your attention please” or Cowbell There is one of me and roughly 30 of you! I need to be able to gain everyone’s attention in a timely manner – less than 3 seconds! 2. Food and Drink Small snacks or drinks may be consumed at your desk on non-lab days. NO food or drink of any kind is to be brought into the lab stations at the back of the science classroom. 3. Cell Phones and other Electronic Devices These items are not allowed during class time. All devices should be turned off and put away. If an electronic becomes a disruption in class I will follow the school’s electronics policy. Absolutely no electronic devices will be allowed during test times. 4. Openers You will dedicate approximately 15 pages of your lab notebook to tape in Openers. When you walk into class, there will be a question(s) posted on the board related to material being covered that you will be expected to answer. I expect you to begin working on the opening question in your assigned seat. Openers are a graded task based on completion and participation stamps. If you are absent, it will be your responsibility to get the question from another student.

Classroom Policies 5. Turning in Work
Classwork should be turned into the appropriate turn in box (physics/chemistry) once it is completed. Homework should be turned in at the beginning of class during Opener time. 6. Class Dismissal Mrs. Kemp, not the clock, dismisses class. You will be dismissed only if all cleaning requirements are complete, I have stopped speaking, and all students are seated and silent in their assigned seat. One of my pet peeves is when students pack up while I am talking or line up at the door and wait for class to end. If you do this, you will not be dismissed. 7. Going to the Restroom Class time is valuable and I expect you to go to the restroom before or after class. I understand that special circumstances do arise, and in these situations you may go to the bathroom by filling out the pass and getting it signed. Only one person should be out of the room at a time. You must wait until I am finished giving notes or instructions. 8. Pencil Sharpeners Sharpen pencils before class starts. It is ok to use the pencil sharpener if your pencil does break, however, please be respectful when deciding when a good time to sharpen your pencil is.

Classroom Policies 9. Student Movement
No student should be wandering around class at any time unless given instructions to do so. There will also be assigned seating and at no time is it ok to sit in a seat other than your assigned seat. If you are not in your assigned seat, you may be marked absent. 10. C3B4ME During classroom activities or labs I would like you to request assistance from three of your fellow students before you seek my advice. * There is more than one teacher in this room [Symbol] *If there are safety concerns consult with Mrs. Kemp immediately! 11. Participation Everyone is expected to participate in class. This includes answering/attempting to answer questions, participating in labs or demos, or anything else that Mrs. Kemp dreams up for you to participate in. Have fun and be excited to be in this class every day and learn about the world around you.
