12. Science
Patterns of Earth and Sky - Students learn that stars are all around us in space, develop an understanding of scale and distance in the universe, and discover how the spin and orbit of our planet causes us to observe daily and yearly patterns of stars. Students apply their understanding of why we see different stars at different times to explain what is shown on the artifact, and what might be on the missing piece.
Modeling Matter - Students will understand that there is a connection between the observable properties of materials and the properties of the molecules of which those materials are composed. Students will also be able to explain a variety of things that can happen when two substances are mixed, at both the observable scale and the nanoscale.
The Earth System - Students investigate how interactions between the parts of the Earth system affect the movement and distribution of water (systems and system models), and they apply their understanding to design solutions for a water shortage. Students also obtain information from first hand investigations, models, and text to figure out how new substances can form through chemical reactions, even though no matter is created or destroyed (energy and matter).
Ecosystem Restoration - Students use models to investigate why a reforested area of a Costa Rican rain forest is not thriving.

As a 5th grade student, we expect that each child comes to class with a respectful attitude.
As a 5th grade student, we expect that each child comes prepared to class.
As a 5th grade student, we expect that students turn around behavior when redirected.

Half of the total points in the Aspen = Missing Assignment.
Please ask your son/daughter about this assignment and check through materials.

18. Homework Expectations
Homework will be utilized in class. It is important that the students complete their homework and turn it in on time.
Late homework- 5% deducted each day it is late.
Absences – Students will have time to make up their work. This will be arranged between teacher and student.
