Starter: What happens when…
You squeeze a flake bar? You leave hair straighteners on a wooden table? A volcano lets out a lava flow?
2
Metamorphic rocks E: List properties of metamorphic rocks D: Classify rocks as metamorphic or not C: Describe the properties of metamorphic rocks B: Compare the textures of metamorphic rocks A: Link the properties of metamorphic rocks with the texture
3
Granite Sandstone Schist Slate Mudstone Basalt Conglomerate Obsidian Marble Breccia Gabbro Gneiss Blues Sort the rocks into sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous Sedimentary: are made of Igneous: are made when Metamorphic: are made when
4
Granite Sandstone Schist Slate Mudstone Basalt Conglomerate Obsidian Marble Breccia Gabbro Gneiss Sort the rocks into the 3 rock groups. Write the key features next to the rock groups - crystalline (x2) - clastic - soft - dense (X2) - foliated - fossils Summarise where each rock group comes from

Granite Sandstone Schist Slate Mudstone Basalt Conglomerate Obsidian Marble Breccia Gabbro Gneiss Reds Sort the rocks into the 3 groups Describe the main properties of each rock group Explain how you know marble and gneiss are in a group together

Which rock is metamorphic?
Crystalline Clastic Rounded grains Foliated How do you know it is metamorphic? What properties can you see it has that makes it metamorphic? How do you know that the other rock is not metamorphic? What other questions may you like to ask to be 100% sure?
9
Sentence starters I think the metamorphic rock is… I know that this rock is metamorphic because… This rock obviously has… I know the other rock is not metamorphic because… I know metamorphic rocks would have…
10
Which rock has been buried to the greatest depth?
Describe how you know Include the key terms crystalline& foliated
11
Sentence starters 2 The rock which was buried deepest is… I can see that this rock has… This forms when…
12
Peer assessment E: List properties of metamorphic rocks
D: Classify rocks as metamorphic or not C: Describe the properties of metamorphic rocks B: Compare the textures of metamorphic rocks A: Link the properties of metamorphic rocks with the texture Now you need to:
13
Plenary: Make 2 improvements to your arguments Slate is used to make roofs. Explain how it being formed under high pressure helps make it suitable for this job. Marble is used to make columns for important buildings. Explain which properties make it suitable for this job.
14
Starter: Identify the areas of high pressure & high temperature
15
Metamorphism E: Identify two ways metamorphic rocks form D: Classify metamorphic rocks by formation C: Describe two ways metamorphic rocks form B: Compare the textures of metamorphic rocks A: Link the method of formation with the properties of metamorphic rocks

What happens when you leave something hot on a table?
How are mountains made? What happens when you leave something hot on a table? What would these rocks look like? What happens to the rock around a magma chamber? Regional metamorphism Blues Contact metamorphism What is the temperature & pressure from contact metamorphism like?

What happens when you leave something hot on a table?
How are mountains made? What happens when you leave something hot on a table? Describe the properties of these rocks What happens to the rock around a magma chamber? Regional metamorphism Reds Contact metamorphism Describe the conditions for contact metamorphism Explain the properties of these rocks
19
Compare the effects of regional and contact metamorphism on rock properties
What is regional metamorphism? What are the rocks that are made this way? Describe the properties of these rocks What is contact metamorphism?
20
Sentence starters Regional metamorphism is when… It is called ‘regional’ because… The pressure and temperature conditions is very… Some rocks that form this way are… These rocks are usually very… Contact metamorphism is when… It is called ‘contact’ because… The pressure and temperature conditions are… A rock that forms this way is… These rocks are usually….
21
Really stuck… sort into two types
Contact metamorphism is when magma touches surrounding rocks. Gneiss and schists are rocks that form this way. It is called contact because it happens on contact. It is called regional because it happens over a huge area. Regional metamorphism is when continents collide. The pressure is very high and the temperature varies. The temperatures are very high and the pressure is usually very low. These rocks are usually crystalline and are not foliated. They are very dense and are usually foliated. Sometimes minerals like garnet are found in them.
22
Exit slip I am happy with… I need some more work on…
