The Working Class No improvement in the standard of living or working conditions Many watched their livelihoods disappear with new inventions and machines that replaced them In frustration many revolted by attacking factories and destroying the machines Poor living and working conditions Worked 6 days a week/16 hours/day Kids and women worked in factory with the men Diseases from water and air Heavy equipment The Middle Class Men worked outside the home, women stayed in and supervised the household Servants – cheap and hired often Sons – sent to school Daughters – prepared for domestic life Believed education would bring success Wore fancy clothes Enjoyed a comfortable standard of living and ate well Most were not concerned with the poor
