1 Stress and Anxiety Awareness
Goal: the goal of this session is to discuss stress and anxiety, as well as ways to manage them. Objectives: at the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. comprehend what stress is 2. differentiate between different forms of anxiety Setting: UNF freshman orientation Audience: college freshman Materials needed: Stress and Anxiety Awareness Powerpoint Presentation, set of blank notecards Overview: In this session, the facilitator and the audience will discuss what stress is, signs of stress, and ways to manage stress. Also, we will discuss anxiety, common forms of anxiety, and how to treat anxiety. Participants should be able to comprehend what stress is, as well as, differentiate between different forms of anxiety. Participants will hopefully walk away with a better understanding of how their bodies show signs of stress or anxiety, so that they may better manage or treat them. Sara McDowell

2 What is Stress? Pose these ideas to audience: Is stress:
A force imposed on your body? A feeling? An unpleasant situation? A reaction or response to change? What do you think?-Have audience respond with their own thoughts. “thank you for your ideas, now let us look at a definition of stress”

3 What is Stress? The process by which your body responds to changes in the environment Includes a combination of responses: Emotional Mental Physical Signs of stress? Describe stress. Pose question about signs of stress. Have audience respond with thoughts. “those are some great examples, I have some others listed on the next slide”

4 Signs of Stress Inability to concentrate Conflict in relationships
Becoming less active A short temper Now that you know what some signs of stress are… Let’s break into small groups and think about what you can do to reduce stress. Sudden changes in appetite Irritability

5 Activity Split into small groups of 3 or 4 group members
Write down 1 or 2 ways that you manage stress Please share with your group members Split the group of participants up into small groups to discuss the ways that they manage stress. Point out common techniques.

6 Managing Stress Ask participants to share their ideas for stress management. Pictures are just some examples of ways to manage stress.

7 What is Anxiety? Same as stress? Pose these ideas to the audience

8 What is Anxiety? An emotional state characterized by feelings of:
apprehension nervousness fear Describe anxiety. Some mild anxiety might be self-managed like stress, but it is a disorder that might need medical treatment.

9 Common Forms GAD-dread of everyday situations
OCD-repetitive, unwanted thoughts PTSD-intense fear after trauma is over Describe some common forms of anxiety. Ask participants if they are familiar with any of these.

Treating Anxiety Seek help from a doctor or the UNF Counseling Center (904) Anxiety disorders can be treated with therapy , medication, or a combination of both of these. If you suspect that you have anxiety, please seek help from a doctor or go to the UNF counseling center.
