• Text structure: Use paragraphs to organize ideas around a theme.
• Appropriate choice of pronoun and noun within sentences to aid cohesion and avoid repetition.
• Punctuation: Use of inverted commas and other punctuation to indicate direct speech.
• Apostrophes to mark plural possession.
• Use of commas after fronted adverbials.
• Plan writing: Discuss writing which is similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar.
• Drafting and writing: Compose and rehearse sentences orally to progressively build a varied and rich vocabulary and increasing range of sentence structures.
• Spelling: Use the first two or three letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary.
• Write simple sentences dictated by the teacher. • Reading: Check text makes sense, discussing understanding and explaining the meaning of words in context.
