About ReConfirm
4
Project is implemented by:
ReConfirm ReConfirm is a four-year (2+2), EU-funded project that started in 2017. Project is implemented by:
5
ReConfirm is an EU funded project designed specifically to assist European regions and industrial stakeholders in implementing their action plan under the Smart Specialisation Platform for Industrial Modernisation (S3P-Industry). ReConfirm aims to help inter-regional partners move towards an investment protocol in their industrial domain.
6
Key aspects Main support service to the S3P- Industry, supporting partnerships in developing investment protocols through… Research (Mapping etc.); Strategic advice; Matchmaking.
7
S3P-Industry Platform for interregional cooperation… Created in 2016;
To match smart specialization priorities; Develop co-investments; Hosted by JRC Seville; Involving support of various EC entities (REGIO, GROW…).
13
ReConfirm’s Ambition
14
ReConfirm supports Partnerships by:
Identifying potential investment projects Identifying relevant industrial domains Mobilising stakeholders Identifying gaps Organising events (collaboration labs, Strategic Workshops) Tailored services
15
ReConfirm provides cross-cutting activities through:
Background analyses (RIM+ update) Identification of other support resources Facilitating links to other networks Targeted communication (incl. lagging regions)
16
Target: Investment protocol
An investment protocol is an agreement of involved parties on a list of initiatives and commitment to: preparing individual business plans for the foreseen investments finding resources to co-finance the investments envisaged in the protocol ReConfirm supports established Partnerships to work together on modernising their industries and deliver joint investment protocols.

Types of co-investment projects

ReConfirm in Action
19
Activities and progress Partnership meetings
Activity Date Outcome Kick-off meeting Kick-off meeting in Brussels to get acquainted and determine the scope of the partnership. Partnership meeting 1 Partnership meeting 1 in Halle, Germany to identify priority areas and establish working groups. Partnership meeting 2 Partnership meeting 2 in Brussels, planned on 30 September to decide on project ideas to be further developed in light of the Technical Assistance Facility (TAF) application.
20
Activities and progress Polymers Working Group
Activity Date Outcome WG meeting 1 Defined societal drivers and put activity in context of European (policy) developments. Identified 4 topics to further develop in pairs: Recycling packaging materials (Catalonia and Lombardy) Bioplastics (Catalonia and Limburg) 3D-printing in context of recycling (Catalonia, Limburg and Lombardy) Lightweight packaging (Limburg and Catalonia). Project ideas to be shared in the working group in mid-September and presented during Partnership meeting 2. WG meeting 2
21
Activities and progress Alternative Feedstock Working Group
Activity Date Outcome WG meeting 1 Presented several concrete project ideas that during the working group meetings. A database of projects (19) and an overview of all the stakeholders and their activities has been created. Stakeholders and regions to continue work on further specifying the projects, with a particular emphasis on identifying the needs and the interregional dimension. WG meeting 2
22
Activities and progress Sustainable Process Technologies Working Group
Activity Date Outcome WG meeting 1 A list of 10 potential ideas has been presented related to SPT, this has been narrowed down to 7 ideas. Ideas to be further concretized. Main topics identified are Flow Chemistry and Chemistry 4.0. These topics serve as main focal points and will be further developed by the region of Catalonia. Projects developed will be shared in the working group by early September to find common ground in advance of the Partnership meeting 2. WG meeting 2 WG meeting 3
23
Activities and progress Chemical Recycling Working Group
Activity Date Outcome WG meeting 1 The idea of the Usti region is to close the circle between customer – collector – pyrolyser – refiner – producer. In order to do that, several choices on the feedstock and technology need to be made, such as on decentralised vs. centralised collection and processing as well as on refinery vs. petro chemistry. Many regions have a common interest in the area and face similar challenges.
24
Proposed Investment project
Challenge addressed Inter-regional dimension Request for collaboration Organisation and role Added value Chemical recycling of waste plastic material – possibility to utilize the process of pyrolysis to produce pyrolysis condensate from waste plastic material, which can serve as a feedstock for petrochemical technologies (production of plastic material in quality parameters that of the virgin material) Increase the amount of plastic material recycled. Effective plastic waste processing in EU. Effective technology in vicinity of a petrochemical complex. Sorting process of the waste in effective way. Logistic chain of the waste/pyrolysis condensate material stream. Quality of produced pyrolysis condensates. Produced plastic material with certain amount of recycled compound will be available on the market for whole EU. Process will be suitable for introduction on different Strenghtening of Europe’s role as pioneer in the industry of chemical recycling. Searching for partners with R&D background to help with dehalogenation of produced pyrolysis condensate and further quality improvements of this material. Search for partners to help with effective waste sorting. To share an experience (if any) of other regions with industrial-scale pyrolysis of waste plastic materials. To secure a reliable source of pyrolysis condensate for R&D activities associated with this project.
