N1.1 Support Plenary
For this game you will need to draw six boxes.
Label each box as shown.
Someone calls out six digits, one at a time.
You must decide in which box to write each digit as it is called out.
The idea is to end up with the largest number after all six digits have been called out.
Preamble
This game should reinforce pupils’ understanding of place value. It may be extended to cover decimals. Once the game has been played a few times it would be useful to discuss strategy with the class. The rules can be altered to make the goal getting the smallest number.
Possible content
Place value, possibly informal vocabulary of probability.
Resources Large 10-sided dice, or some other means of randomly generating the integers 0 to 9. Squared paper (optional).
