7 Knowledge Check!

8 Answer: Treatment, control, and prevention of disease
What are appropriate uses of antibiotics in food animal production? (Select all that apply) Increased average daily gain Treatment of disease Control of disease Prevention of disease Answer: Treatment, control, and prevention of disease

9 STEP 3: Use antibiotics only when they provide measurable benefits
Reduce mortality Improve animal welfare Improve herd health

10 STEP 4: Fully implement the management practices described for responsible use of animal health products into daily operation Utilize the Good Production Practices (GPPs) Keep written records Use medications responsibly Maintain a valid VCPR

11 STEP 5: Have a working VCPR and follow the responsible antibiotic use guidelines
Use veterinary input as the basis for ALL antibiotic decision-making. Antibiotics should be used for prevention, control, or treatment only when there is an appropriate clinical diagnosis or herd history to justify their use. Limit antibiotic use for prevention, control, or treatment to ill or at-risk animals, treating the fewest animals possible.

12 STEP 5: Have a working VCPR and follow the responsible antibiotic use guidelines
Antibiotics that are important in treating infections in human medicine (medically important antibiotics) should be used in animals only after careful review and reasonable justification. Mixing together injectable or water medications (including antibiotics) by anyone other than a veterinarian is illegal. Minimize environmental exposure through proper handling and disposal of all animal health products, including antibiotics.

13 Knowledge Check!

14 True or False? Do not limit antibiotic use to ill or at-risk animals, treat as many animals as possible. Answer: False Why?
