Thursday, September 26th, 2019 Common Core Standards: RL and SL Aim: How can we develop personal and historical background on a novel on the Chinese immigrant experience? Objective: Students will be able to establish prior knowledge and historical background for a novel on the immigrant experience. Do Now: Choose one of the following questions. 1.) Chinese culture believes in the importance of family, harmony, humility and obedience. Many cultures also believe in these values. Which of these values are also important to your culture and why? 2.) What can you predict about the novel, Joy Luck Club? Refer to the title and/or the synopsis on the back of the novel.

Thursday, September 26th, 2019 Aim: How can we develop personal and historical background of a novel on the Chinese immigrant experience? Objective: Students will be able to establish prior knowledge and historical background for a novel on the Chinese immigrant experience. Agenda A.) Do Now: Answer the Do Now. Turn and talk with your tablemates. Captains will prepare to share their tablemates’ answers with the whole class. B.) Discuss/Share: -Captains will share Do Now answers. C.) Work Period #1: Fill out KWL chart on China/Chinese culture. D.) Whole-Class Sharing: Discuss KWL chart on China/Chinese culture. E.) Work Period #2: Research the following questions (using an electronic device): 1.) On which continent is China located? 2.) List the eleven countries that border China. 3.) What do the Chinese call their country? (a word which means “middle country”) 4.) What is the capital of China? 5.) How many people live in China today? 6.) List three major religions in China (though religion is discouraged in Chinese government). 7.) List two or three popular or traditional exports from China. 8.) Describe the Cultural Revolution in China. 9.) Describe the Chinese government today. 10.) What’s one news story about China today? F.) Q & A/Reflections: What are the most interesting facts learned about China today?
