12 Introduction to Facebook Groups

13 Facebook Groups Facebook Groups (facebook.com/groups) are online spaces where people can INTERACT, SHARE and COLLABORATE with others. You DON’T NEED TO BE FRIENDS with someone to interact with them in Facebook Groups. Use Facebook Groups to provide students with ON-DEMAND and MOBILE LEARNING opportunities. Facebook Groups (facebook.com/groups) are an online space where people can interact and share with others. It’s a great way for students to work on collaborative projects with each other, communicate with parents or create a Personal Learning Network (PLN) with your colleagues. When it comes to using Facebook Groups with students, it’s worth noting that you don’t need to be Facebook friends with someone to interact with them in Facebook Groups. When non-friends are in the same group as you, this does not allow them to see any more of your profile information that your privacy settings allow. Think of Facebook Groups as an opportunity for you to extend learning outside the walls of the traditional classroom. When you use Facebook Groups to complement what you teach in the classroom, you are providing students with on-demand and mobile learning opportunities. Adapted from: LIC:

14 Privacy on Facebook Groups
3 types of Facebook Groups: Open Closed (recommended) Secret There are three types of Facebook Groups: ● Secret: Only members can see the group and what members post. ● Closed: Everyone can see the group. Only members see posts ● Open (public): Everyone can see the group and what members post. In an educational setting, we suggest you create Groups that are “Closed,” not “Open.” This means the content of the group is private, available only to members of the group. This helps protect the privacy of your students. It’s important to note that in “closed” groups, your Facebook Groups membership list is visible to outsiders, but the content is not. You can change the privacy settings for your group by clicking the “Edit Settings” box located in the top right corner of Facebook Groups. Content of ‘closed’ groups are private, available only to members of the group. Though, the groups membership list is visible to outsiders. You can change the privacy settings for your group by clicking the “Edit Settings” box located in the top right corner of Facebook Groups. Adapted from:

15 Facebook Groups Features
Files Allows you to upload a file (25 MB), or create a Doc (wiki) where people can collectively write and edit notes. Group Chat Allows members of the group to talk to group members in real time, or catch up with the conversation later. Ask Question Allows you or students to poll members of your group and have them share their opinions or add a new question of their own. 1 2 3 Group Docs This feature allows people to collectively write and edit notes with one another. Similar to a wiki, they can be viewed and edited by all members of a group, and any group member may add or remove sections of the Doc. Group Chat This feature allows members of the group to talk to group members in real time, or catch up with the conversation later. To chat with members of a group, first go to the group. Then, select the chat option from the Actions menu on the right-hand side of the page. Group Privacy When you create a group, you can completely control its privacy. There are three different access levels: Open, Closed, Secret. You can learn more about each of these privacy settings in the Facebook Help Center. Ask Question Allows you or students to poll members of your group and have them share their opinions or add a new question of their own. This is a opportunity for students to share what they know and learn from their peers. You can learn more at Facebook.com/questions ( Adapted from: * Learn more about ‘Ask Question’:

16 Facebook Groups Features
Add Photo / Video Allows you to upload photos and videos, and share them privately with just the members of your group. Events You can use Facebook Events to automatically remind students about upcoming tests, events, and due dates for term papers or projects. Group You can set up an address for your group. s sent to this address will go to all group members. Write Post (Wall) Allows you to easily and quickly share content you find on the web with any of your Facebook Groups. 4 5 Add Photo / Video This feature allows you to upload a whole set of photos and share privately with just the members of your group. This is a easy way to share pictures from a field trip, visit from a guest speaker or even share a presentation. Events We think this will quickly become one of your favorite features in Facebook Groups! You can use Facebook Events to automatically remind students about upcoming tests, school events, and due dates for term papers or projects. Write Post (Wall) Allows you to easily and quickly share content you find on the web with any of your Facebook Groups. 6 7 Adapted from:

19 Create a Facebook Page!

20 Example?

21 Differences Between Pages & Groups
Feature Pages Groups Make it private (open to members/fans only) No Yes Allows distinct URLs Indexed by search engines like Google Admin can access visitor statistics (Insights) Can be cross-promoted on other fan pages Ability to create events and invitations Add Apps (e.g. Twitter or blog feeds) Fans/Members can leave comments and “likes” Can send out bulk s to your members’ in boxes Can create Docs (Wikis) Group Chat Information posted on your wall will appear on your fans’ walls The administrator’s personal information isn’t listed If you are confused whether to use Facebook Groups or Facebook Pages to interact with your students, this table on the slide should help you decide. If you want a closed group, whereby only your students can access and participate, then go for Facebook Groups. If you want to for example establish an open community allowing anyone to join, then Facebook Pages would be better. It really depends on what you want. What I like about using both these Facebook tools is that they enable us easily to share resources on the wall. Students and teachers can easily upload pictures and videos, conduct polls, brainstorm using docs, and basically ‘Like’ and comment on any activity going on in the learning space. What LMS provide such ease and flexibility in sharing and interacting? Adapted from: Slidecast:

26 Use Facebook Groups/Pages to Amplify…
PRE-CLASS Remind and gage how many that will be coming for class/tutorial/event (Event). Introduce lessons or the content/discussions to be covered (Wall/Docs). Students post questions before class/tutorial (Wall/Questions). DURING CLASS Post comments/questions during class/tutorial (Wall/Questions). Share opinions/resources during class/activities (Wall/Docs/Photos/Video). POST-CLASS /BETWEEN CLASSES Post reflections/questions/notes after the class (Wall/Questions). Facilitate discussions on relevant issues (Wall/Questions/Photos). Students share their learning discoveries/findings (Docs/Photos/Video). Lecturer/students comments links and resources shared during class (Wall). Send message reminders/announcements about upcoming quizzes, assignments, etc. Share informal learning nuggets (Wall/Questions/Docs/Photos/Video). Adapted from:

28 Facebook is Legalized for teaching & learning only!
Use Facebook with LMS? *LMS: Learning Management System Social Learning Informal Easy-to-Use Sharing Communication Collaboration Communities Mobile Learning Always Connected! Formal Learning Course Notes Schedules Assignments Quizzes Grades But how can we use Facebook for learning and teaching? As students are increasingly connecting to Facebook via their smartphones, it might not be a bad idea using it for at least communicating with them and for collaboration activities. Although, there was resistance from both teachers and students at my university (IMU) initially, they are today more open to using it, and some teachers are using it to interact with their students using Facebook Groups or Facebook Pages.
