What is Research4Life? Collective name for five programmes – Hinari, AGORA, OARE, ARDI and GOALI – that provide developing countries with free or low-cost access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content online. A public-private partnership of WHO, FAO, UNEP, WIPO, ILO, Cornell and Yale Universities, the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers and up to 155 international publishers. The goal of Research4Life is to reduce the knowledge gap between high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries by providing affordable access to scholarly, professional and research information.

Who can register for Research4Life?

The value of Research4Life
An average journal subscription costs approx*: US$ 1,731 Research4Life provides access up to: 20,000 journals** Total monetary value provided to each institution: up to US$ 34,620,000 Institutions in 72 of the world’s low-income countries receive free access to journal and book content via Research4Life. Institutions in a further 45 countries pay US $1,500 per year for a subscription to the Research4Life content – an effective discount of over 99.9%. Registration is available in En / Fr / Es Only eligible countries can register. Individuals are not eligible to register, only institutions. Only one registration is required per institution. Your institution may already be registered, ask your librarian first. More than one contact is required to register an institution (Librarian, director and preferably a technical support contact). All registered institutions need to sign a user agreement that defines the rules that Research4Life users agree to: It is ok to Share the Research4Life credentials with colleagues, students, professors or other members of the institution Download or print up to 15% of a journal issue or book. Use material for educational purposes (course packs or reserves) or make copies for institution members. It is not ok to Share the credentials outside the institution Publish contents accessed through Research4Life or the credentials online or download all articles from a single issue.

Research4Life training around the world with the collaboration of UN agencies and university libraries. Now, more online training: Free modules on how to use the different programme platforms, advocacy and information literacy. New Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Research4Life coming late 2019.

AGRIS agris.fao.org Multilingual bibliographic database with over ten million records, facilitates access to publications, journal articles, monographs, book chapters, and grey literature in agriculture and related sciences. Some full text, some datasets. GARDIAN The CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture aims to harness of big data capabilities to accelerate and enhance the impact of international agricultural research. Explore over 155,500 publications across CGIAR and beyond: over 19,000 datasets.

Related initiatives UN Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries Helps LDCs build the science, technology and innovation capacity. INASP Works to strengthen the capacity of individuals and institutions to produce, share and use research and knowledge. Has initiative aimed at improving research access. AuthorAID Support, mentoring, resources and training for researchers in low and middle income countries. UN Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries: Helps LDCs build the science, technology and innovation capacity needed to promote the structural transformation of their economies, eradicate poverty and foster sustainable development. Working with UNECA and NASAC to establish academies of science where they don’t exist and strengthen those that are already established. INASP works to strengthen the capacity of individuals and institutions to produce, share and use research and knowledge, in support of national development. Has an initiative aimed at improving research access.
