By the end of Year 4, we would like your child to be an independent, creative writer. • Vary sentence structure, using different openers. • Use adjectival phrases (e.g. biting cold wind). • Use appropriate choice of noun or pronoun. • Use fronted adverbials. • Use apostrophe for plural possession. • Use a comma after fronted adverbial (e.g. Later that day, I heard bad news.). • Use commas to mark clauses. • Use inverted commas and other punctuation to punctuate direct speech. • Use paragraphs to organize ideas around a theme. • Use connecting adverbs to link paragraphs. • Write with increasing legibility, consistency and fluency. We teach English in Year 4 by using a variety of stimulus, such as quality texts and picture books, video clips, songs, poems, animation. During the year some of the exciting opportunities will be to create stories, make an animation clip, produce leaflets and letters. We try to make writing meaningful and purposeful. Homework Expectations
Mathletics is our online Maths homework tool. This will be set every other week. We will also be using the TT Rockstars for times tables. The Maths Practice Book will be optional Daily reading is still important and children are given a list of spellings or spelling rule each week to learn – they can be as creative as they like! Class homework should be completed weekly. The children can choose a task from the homework grid. When appropriate, pre-learning vocabulary will be provided during the year. These are words that your child will hear at school and could be discussed at home. WELCOME Shottermill Junior School Open Morning
