3 MONDAY, AUGUST 12 (*modified scheduling required – Homerooms to complete Reading Diagnostics) OPENING: Vocabulary Study Words Warm-Up WORK SESSION: “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde and “Teenagers” by Pat Mora Mini-Lesson - How do you analyze poetry versus Prose (Nikki Giovanni: The Poet and Her Craft) Poetry basic components review (free verse, stanza, literary terms – author’s style, theme, inference, speaker, simile, personification; compare/contrast ) Whole Class – guided and independent analysis of “Identity” CLOSING: What message is conveyed about teens by authors? Do you agree? Why or why not? Homework: Reread/review poems –answer critical thinking questions distributed; continue to study 9 vocabulary words in Vocabulary Study Notebook for test on Friday

Words Homework: Be prepared for test on Friday (definitions, words in context, characteristics) A journal prompt to be assigned for students to be prepared to type in Office 365 as a word document and submit on tomorrow.

Work Session: Collaboration with Media Specialist to have students learn how to utilize Office 365 student account: Students will type an and a journal entry on a word document and submit by . Closing: What new have you learned about the uses of Office 365? Time allowed – students will do library checkouts Homework: Review words for vocabulary test on Friday.

7 Thursday, August 15 Opening: Vocabulary Study Warm- Up Work Session:
Literary Terms Mini-Lesson: (Central Idea/Main Idea, Summary) Students will independently read Newsela article “When and Why Did People First Start Using Money? And complete a reading comprehension multiple choice quiz. (Differentiation (article text) to student lexile data). Closing: Whole Class Discussion Following independent task, whole class will discuss the impact that money has made since its inception towards enabling diverse cultures to communicate. Homework: Vocabulary Test tomorrow – Words 1-9

8 Friday, August 16 Opening – Work Session: Vocabulary Test
Work Session - Closing: 1. Overview Lexile Chart/College Career Ready Stretch band 2. Plot Fall Diagnostic Results and complete reading goals on I-Ready Log sheet to begin year long self-assessing. Staple inside front cover of student portfolio.
