Mini-Lesson - How do you analyze poetry versus Prose (Nikki Giovanni: The Poet and Her Craft)
Poetry basic components review (free verse, stanza, literary
terms – author’s style, theme, inference, speaker, simile, personification; compare/contrast )
Whole Class – guided and independent analysis of “Identity”
CLOSING: What message is conveyed about teens by authors? Do you agree? Why or why
not?
Homework: Reread/review poems –answer critical thinking questions distributed; continue
to study 9 vocabulary words in Vocabulary Study Notebook for test on Friday

Students will independently read Newsela article “When and Why Did People First
Start Using Money? And complete a reading comprehension multiple choice quiz.
(Differentiation (article text) to student lexile data).
Closing: Whole Class Discussion
Following independent task, whole class will discuss the impact that money has
made since its inception towards enabling diverse cultures to communicate.
