2 Figure 1 Correlation between measured plasma sodium concentration ([Na+]) and predicted plasma [Na+] by the Edelman construct in a porcine model of acute hyponatremia. Hyponatremia was induced with intravenous desmopressin acetate and infusion of 2.5% glucose in sterile water (10mL/kg/h for 8 hours) in 10 pigs. These animals also received Ringer’s lactate (5mL/kg/h for 8 hours), an infusion also administered to the control group (n=6). During the 8 hours of observation, plasma [Na+] was reduced from 136 to 120mmol/L (Δ[Na+] of −16mmol/L). The Edelman equation was reformulated to derive expected plasma [Na+] based on the external balances of water and cation. The linear regression was constructed by pooling all observations of measured plasma [Na+] and predicted plasma [Na+] using the Edelman model from all pigs (R=0.98; P < 0.001). Open circles denote control animals; closed circles, hyponatremic animals.
