1 Math Textbook Adoption: Algebra I
The 7-12 Math Adoption Committee evaluated several textbooks and selected Math Algebra I, McDougal Littell which was subsequently approved by Curriculum Council on 3/13/08. The presentation highlights the process that was followed and the reasons for making this adoption.

4 Textbook Adoption Committee
Math teachers from each Middle and High School site were selected by their departments. Sites were limited to two voting members.

5 Toolkit Training November ‘07 – Textbook Adoption Committee attends Math Tool Kit training at the SJCOE. The Purpose is to establish the process in which our next textbook will be adopted.

6 Publishers’ Faire Some members of committee heard presentations by publishers. Algebra Readiness sub-committee developed rubric and protocol for evaluation of textbooks.

7 Rubric Process February ‘08 – Focused adoption on Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1. Focused on protocol for teacher evaluation of textbooks. Postponed decision for piloting texts until after preview.

8 Site Evaluation of Textbooks
Various publishers’ textbooks are sent to the Middle and High School Sites for evaluation. Teachers use adopted rubric to score each textbook. Scores for all textbooks are compiled and averaged.

9 Textbook Selection February ’08 – Textbook adoption committee makes recommendations for the adoption of new materials. Each site had no more than two voting representatives. Vote is based on how each site’s department evaluated each textbook. After discussing piloting as an option, a motion was made to adopt the top selection.

12 Selection: McDougal Littell (green)
TE begins with individual warm ups and provides questioning strategies. Student edition focuses on one specific standard at a time. SE pages are reader-friendly (well-organized, states standards, relevance, vocabulary is highlighted, helpful hints) Examples are detailed and color-coded Each chapter has a spiral review by standard Each chapter begins with a review of foundational standards that new concepts There is a balance of introductory, intermediate and advanced problem sets. The adoption includes comprehensive resources for universal access.
