Standard Equation of a Hyperbola
The standard form of the equation of a hyperbola is π₯ββ 2 π 2 β π¦βπ 2 π 2 =1 or π¦ βπ 2 π 2 β π₯ ββ 2 π 2 =1 Where (h, k) is the center, and the asymptotes are at Β±π π . *the dotted lines are the asymptotes that the hyperbola can never touch.

Ex 1: Graph the Hyperbola
π π π β π π ππ =π Locate the center. Determine which direction the hyperbola will be going. Using the a or b (depending on which direction you chose in #2), put 2 points on the graph that will be the vertices for each half of the hyperbola. Use a and b to lightly draw in the asymptotes. This will determine the width of the curves. Fill in the curves of the hyperbola.

Example 2: Graph the following
π₯ β π¦ 2 4 =1 π¦ β π₯ 2 9 =1 4 π₯ 2 β16 π¦ 2 =64
