6 Why your vote matters: If you don’t vote, someone else’s vote counts for more. In the last election 15 million didn’t vote- enough people to choose a different government. Governments can have a powerful effect on your lives. For example older people tend to vote more- so governments tend to protect things for old people and cut services for young people. For example the cost of educating you at school is £3600 a year. The cost of educating you at University is £40,000 a year. Different governments choose to give or take away this money. For example some governments want to take less money from you, others want to spend more on areas like health and education.
