The Role of the Curriculum Coordinator • To prepare DCA (Dar-ul-Arqam Common Assessment) in Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies for Grades 3 – 8 for each 9-week in order to excel in the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test • Monitor Teachers, Principals, and Schools for Curriculum Implementation • Schedule and Proctor DCA

Implementation of Curriculum • Deliver necessary knowledge and skills dictated for each grade (PreK – 12 th ) by Texas Education Agency (www.tea.state.tx.us) known as TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills)www.tea.state.tx.us • For example, in 6th grade Math, there are six (6) objectives covering 13 skill areas. • You are given week-by-week lesson plans or Pacing Guide for the coming year, dividing in 4 – quarters • We want to make sure that all objectives and skill areas are met according to the Pacing Guide

Implementation of Curriculum • Develop a Lesson Plan or Syllabus following the Pacing Guide – Refer to Break-in Session • Provide Lesson Plans to students/parents • Use books and handouts as necessary to develop lesson Plans • Follow Lesson Plans each week • Post in a web site if possible

Monitoring of Curriculum & Teacher Evaluation • Principals are primarily responsible for implementing Pacing Guide and Lesson Plans • Curriculum Coordinator will: • Communicate with the Principal • Make one-to-one conference with teachers • Make classroom visits

Review of TAKS • TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) is a statewide assessment program to assess students’ learning dictated by TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) • It is a graduation requirement for students enrolled in Grade 8 or lower on January 1, 2001, and graduating in the 2004-2005 school year or later

Review of TAKS • Given on Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies • Reading: 3 - 8 and 9 - 11 grades • Writing: 4 – 7 Grades • Mathematics: 3 – 11 Grades • Science: 5, 10 - 11 Grades • English Language Arts: 10 and 11 Grades • Social Studies: 8, 10 and 11 Grades • Visit TAKS at http://www.tea.state.tx.ushttp://www.tea.state.tx.us

Review of DCA • In order to be ready for TAKS, we want to prepare students of Dar-ul-Arqam in the coming years • We want to develop an assessment tool called DCA (Dar-ul-Arqam Common Assessment) that is comparable to TAKS • It will help understand the progress on students’ learning of TEKS skills • It will be given in every 9-weeks

Break-in Session • Group 1: Mathematics • Group 2: English • Group 3: Science • Group 4: Social Studies • Group 5: All 9 – 12 Grades • Group 6: PreK – K Grade • Group 7: 1 st and 2 nd Grade • Group 8: Quran/Islamic Studies

What to Do in Break-in Sessions? • Sub-group teachers of same grade within a subject area from all schools (e.g:, all 3 rd g rade math teachers stay together) • Focus on your TEKS/Pacing Guide (first 9- weeks) • Use your textbook to find the chapters and pages that cover required knowledge and skills • Make a Lesson Plan for the first 9-weeks • Provide a written copy to Principal and Curriculum Coordinator within a week
