1 Workshop Innovation in Forestry and Wood Chain Genova, 31 October 2011

2 Forests and the forest-based sector in the EU: Some basic data l Forests cover around 40% of the EU's land area. l Around 60% in private ownership (estimated 16 million forest owners). l The average annual volume of timber harvested is slightly over 60% of the annual forest growth (potential for increased utilisation of wood). l Forest-based industries employed about 3 million people in 344,000 enterprises. l Production value of 365 billion, producing added value of around120 billion. Forest-based industries in the EU are generally competitive, having a very good technical and commercial performance. (…) However, the sector is facing a number of challenges, in particular as regards the access to raw materials, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, innovation, trade and information of forest-based products.
